Psychiatric Consultation
A psychiatric consultation through PSP, led by a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, involves a comprehensive evaluation of a person's mental health, emotional well-being, and behavioral patterns. A Nurse Practitioner specialized in mental health, conducts the consultation with the aim of understanding the individual's current symptoms, medical history, psychosocial factors, and relevant details to formulate a diagnosis and develop a personalized treatment plan.
Throughout the PSP intake process and consultation, the following information is gathered:
- Gathering basic information such as demographic details, medical history, and current medications.
- Exploring the individual's primary reason for seeking help, including specific symptoms, duration, severity, and triggering factors.
- Inquiring about previous psychiatric diagnoses, treatments, hospitalizations, or therapy sessions, and exploring family psychiatric history.
- Reviewing the person's medical history to identify any physical health conditions or medications that may impact mental health or interact with psychiatric treatments.
- Observation of appearance, behavior, speech, mood, affect, thought processes, cognition, and insight, using standardized assessment tools if needed.
- Formulating a provisional diagnosis based on DSM criteria and considering differential diagnosis.
- Discussing tailored treatment options, including medication management, psychotherapy, lifestyle modifications, and referrals to other specialists.
- Providing information about the diagnosed condition, prognosis, available treatments, coping strategies, stress management techniques, and self-care.
- Establishing a plan for follow-up appointments and ongoing monitoring of treatment progress, managing side effects, and making necessary adjustments to the treatment plan.
- Collaborating with other healthcare providers and making referrals for additional assessments or services as determined by providers.
Throughout the consultation, confidentiality and privacy are maintained, and the individual is encouraged to actively participate in decision-making regarding their mental health care, fostering a supportive and collaborative environment. The PSP Providers' expertise and commitment ensure a thorough and personalized approach to coming alongside each individual as they pursue optimal health.
